The idea for a global university hockey championship – what would eventually become the World Cup of University Hockey (WCoUH)—was first envisioned in 2016 by Jaroslav Straka. As a lifelong supporter of student-athletes and international sport cooperation, he dreamed of creating an event that would unite the world’s top university hockey players while promoting education, cultural exchange, and competitive excellence.
With the support of Paul Hebert and other like-minded leaders in collegiate hockey, the concept quickly gained traction. In 2017, while serving as President of the European University Hockey Association (EUHA), Jaro Straka transformed this vision into a structured initiative. He strongly believed that such international sporting events offered a unique opportunity for student-athletes to build lasting global relationships and friendships, while representing their universities and countries with pride.
The WCoUH became a reality thanks to sports diplomacy and the strong personal relationships established between the presidents of key university hockey associations. The collaboration between Jaroslav Straka (EUHA – European University Hockey Association), Paul Hebert (ACHA – American Collegiate Hockey Association), and Anthon Khramtsov (RSHL – Russian Student Hockey League) was instrumental in turning the idea into action. What began as a personal vision evolved into a historic international event—founded on shared values, mutual respect, and a common passion for advancing university hockey on a global scale.

HISTORY
Year 2018
The inaugural tournament, originally named the World Cup of College Hockey (WCoCH 2018), was hosted across three cities: Banská Bystrica and Brezno in Slovakia, and Krynica-Zdrój in Poland. This pioneering event brought together three international teams: Team USA, Team Russia, and Team Europe “EUHL” selection players from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. Also, thanks to the Erasmus+ project, participants were able to develop key materials supporting student-athletes’ dual careers and to strengthen cooperation among universities and stakeholders across Europe.
The tournament marked a historic milestone as the first step toward creating a global platform for university-level hockey, laying the foundation for what would become the World Cup of University Hockey (WCoUH).

Their initiative, leadership, and unwavering support—led by Attila Nagy and his dedicated team—played a vital role in setting the stage for the event’s return.
